Two out of three people with seizures don't know the cause of their condition. Understanding the genetic basis of your epilepsy and how it compares to others can help researchers find new treatments and possibly a cure.
What do genes tell us about Epilepsy?
Knowing the genetic basis of your epilepsy is valuable for obtaining a diagnosis, estimating prognosis, determining risks, and guiding treatment choices. Finding the genes that cause epilepsy could help us find cures faster because of the information that could be learned about the condition. Through genetic testing you may learn more about the cause of your seizures and you may even help advance research.
- Not everyone has a genetic cause of their epilepsy, but some people do. More than half of all known causes of epilepsy have genetic markers.
- In many cases, the genetic diagnosis can be an important factor in determining treatment. Having a particular genetic marker might give insight into treatments that are known to be beneficial or have shown adverse affects for a given genetic diagnosis.
- To make progress in epilepsy research, scientists need data from a lot of people to help better understand the causes of epilepsy and determine good treatment options.
